Fertility preservation
As the survival rates after cancer treatment are constantly improving, the Netherlands Cancer Institute invests more time into quality of life and survivorship after treatment. A potential side effect of chemotherapy and radiation therapy is infertility. The Netherlands Cancer Institute offers its patients the possibility of fertility preservation, in collaboration with the Amsterdam UMC, location AMC and the LUMC in Leiden. We offer various options for cryopreservation:
- Sperm cells
- Testicular tissue
- Egg cells
- embryos
Fertility preservation before your treatment
Cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery) can harm your fertility. Fertility preservation (cryopreservation by freezing your egg cells, embryos or sperm cells) is only available before the start of your treatment, between your diagnosis and treatment. You may not have much time before starting your treatment, which is why it is so important to have clear and sufficient information about fertility preservation available to patients.
