Radiotherapy

What is radiotherapy?

Radiotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses high doses of x-rays or other energy types to kill cancer cells. All tumors and metastases are beamed externally, through the skin.

The Netherlands Cancer Institute is equipped with the latest radiation technology. We can determine the exact position of your tumor and aim the radiation with precision. Surrounding cells will be minimally affected.

What to expect?

First, you will meet with a radiation oncologist or physician assistant. He or she will explain what you can expect. During the radiation treatment, you will lie down on a 'table' surrounded by machines. This will only take a few minutes. You will have to come back several times to repeat this process during your treatment.

We offer radiation treatment at our main location and at our radiotherapy branch near the Spaanse Gasthuis in Hoofddorp.

What are the side effects?

Different people respond differently to the treatment. The exact side effects you will experience depend on the dose and location of the radiation treatment, and your sensitivity. You may experience fatigue during and after the treatment, and the skin of the affected area might turn red. We will try and make the radiation therapy as comfortable as possible for you.
