Oscar Brouwer, urologist specializing in penile cancer, has been promoted to head of the European Association of Urology’s penile cancer guidelines office committee as of this month. A unique situation – not only because he is now officially the youngest head of the European guidelines office committee, but also because he will develop these guidelines in collaboration with ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) for the very first time.
“Penile cancer is a rare urological condition, so it is strange that we have always kept two separate international guidelines: one for Europe and one for America. The EAU guideline has needed an update for quite some time. Together with a panel with people from both Europe and America, we now try to update these guidelines, which is quite challenging and exciting. I now head the committee for the EAU, which is quite an honor,” Oscar Brouwer tells us.
The NKI is the only (NFU) recognized expert center for penile cancer in the Netherlands and treats approximately 80-85% of penile cancer patients. Oscar also heads the multidisciplinary penile cancer focus group at the NKI and is a member of the Dutch Rare Cancer Platform on behalf of the NKI. “The NKI is part of a network of European expert centers, for which I am the hospital’s penile cancer representative (eUROGEN, EURACAN). This helps us share our knowledge with the rest of Europe while allowing us to stay up to date on new developments.”
