Michiel van der Heijden
I started working at the Netherlands Cancer Center as a medical oncologist in 2013. I also received my training in medical oncology at the hospital, and previously worked here as a researcher. I now treat patients with different types of cancer, primarily those presenting with urological tumors. The dedicated staff at the hospital and their warm approach to our patients make the Netherlands Cancer Institute such a motivating place to work towards the best possible care for cancer patients.
Thanks to our scientific research, we have been able to improve our bladder cancer treatment. Immunotherapy has proven to be effective for certain patients in keeping the disease under control for a very long time. My research aims to improve immunotherapy by investigating the reasons why the treatment sometimes proves ineffective. My work should lead to a better treatment that can be properly adjusted to every single patient.
