I have been working at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) as an epidemiologist since 1981. I investigate factors that could influence the risk of developing cancer, especially breast cancer, and the late side effects of cancer treatment.
The survival rates are steadily increasing, which makes it even more important to investigate whether radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or hormones can have adverse side effects over a longer period of time - by damaging healthy organs or tissue, for example. We can use the results of my research to adapt our treatments to prevent damage from occurring at a later stage. The close collaboration between researchers and physicians makes the NKI a very special place to work.
