As a member of the scientific staff, I research tumor markers in the blood. Tumor markers are substances - often proteins - that are usually present in small numbers. Certain types of cancer, or responses to cancer, cause abnormalities in these numbers, that can be measured in the blood. We use these tumor markers to track the progression of the illness in patients. This can tell us whether treatment is effective, or whether the cancer has returned.
I am involved in research into improvements in the methods of analysis. and also look for new tumor markers. When we find them, we can more accurately track the progression of the illness.
