Thanks to a new blood test, patients with bladder cancer may be able to circumvent a precautionary cystectomy after treatment with immunotherapy. Scientists at the Netherlands Cancer Institute have shown that a new technique can improve the prediction of whether the tumor will recur. The findings by Jeroen van Dorp, Michiel van der Heijden, and Bas van Rhijn, in collaboration with the Cambridge-based company Inivata, have been published in the scientific journal Nature Medicine.
In this study, the scientists analyzed the blood of patients with bladder cancer who had been treated with immunotherapy. The subjects were part of a high-risk group and had an increased chance of disease recurrence, which put them on the waitlist for bladder removal surgery as a precautionary measure.
